{"id":1848,"date":"2017-06-18T08:09:59","date_gmt":"2017-06-18T07:09:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.globaldimension.com\/2017\/06\/reverse-engineer-aermacchi-crtt\/"},"modified":"2017-06-18T08:09:59","modified_gmt":"2017-06-18T07:09:59","slug":"reverse-engineer-aermacchi-crtt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.globaldimension.com\/th\/reverse-engineer-aermacchi-crtt\/","title":{"rendered":"Reverse engineering an Aermacchi CRTT frame"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<p>Why reverse engineering an Aermacchi CRTT frame?\u00a0 Well, I had a dream to go to Bonneville and race a CRTT based bike and try to break a record and I wanted to do some modifications to the frame and cylinder head.\u00a0 I did not want to cut up an original CRTT frame as I am a bit of a history nut and cutting one up would cause me too much mental anguish.\u00a0 So, I had to build the cylinder head and frame from scratch, and to build one I needed to make drawings and 3D models so I could get this cast\/machined\/fabricated. \u00a0(I have still have not made my Bonneville bike, but you get the benefit of some of the engineering output from the exercise.)<\/p>\n<p>We start with the frame.<\/p>\n<p>My first inspiration for picking Aermacchi was reading about Paull Brodie and, in particular, this article <a href=\"http:\/\/flashbackfab.com\/how-to-build-a-racer\/\">http:\/\/flashbackfab.com\/how-to-build-a-racer\/<\/a> . I reached out to Paul and asked him quite a few questions.\u00a0 He made his own CRTT frame with some modifications:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Oversized backbone: 3\u201d DOM 0.120 inch. 4130<\/li>\n<li>New backbone is straight, original has a curve in it.<\/li>\n<li>New 26 degree head tube angle, original came with 28 degree.<\/li>\n<li>The forged side plates on the original CRTT need to be remade taller as the backbone tube is now straight. These new plates were machined, not forged.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have not seen Paul\u2019s work \u2013 it is nothing short of miraculous.\u00a0 He did a replica of an Excelsior where no known motorcycles exist; only 5 photos and that is from the right-hand side.\u00a0 Check it out here <a href=\"http:\/\/flashbackfab.com\/excelsior-homepage\/\">http:\/\/flashbackfab.com\/excelsior-homepage\/<\/a>\u00a0 He made a handful of copies of this bike and he has one left, for $139,000.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/flashbackfab.com\/excelsior-005\/\">http:\/\/flashbackfab.com\/excelsior-005\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Back to CRTT. My reverse engineering started with the frame.<\/p>\n<p>Paul was kind enough to give me some good information, and amazingly he shared with me his drawing of the CRTT replica frame that he made.\u00a0 He drew it by hand on some large sheets thick cream coloured cardboard.\u00a0 He actually cut up his cardboard drawing into A3 size pieces and mailed it to me.\u00a0 I was a little shocked, as it was like cutting up a DaVinci sketch. Bellisimo.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The engine is a single cylinder with a 10-degree angle. Some people find that engine design odd, as it is not popular anymore.\u00a0 But, it is identical to the lower cylinder on every Ducati made today, so it is well proven that a cylinder performs just fine at that angle. \u00a0Many popular road and racing bikes all had very similar engine configuration, such as Moto Guzzi and Motobi. \u00a0It is probably the most popular cylinder layout in the history of motoring, as millions of Japanese and Chinese motorcycles are made every year with this design, albeit relegated to the 125-175cc bikes. \u00a0I like it because it keeps the weight very low, the head is out front so the air hits it first for cooling with the air blast bias being on the exhaust port. Super easy to do any head work such as valve adjustments or complete head removal.
