Ultrasound transducers are designed to measure materials that a flat on both sides, and a tube is exactly the opposite of flat.\u00a0\u00a0 Some of the tubes had various layers of paint, and that complicated it quite a bit.<\/p>\n<p>The most challenging tubes to measure were the small tubes.\u00a0 Smaller tubes have greater curvature, therefore exacerbating the problem with the ultrasound machine.\u00a0 The smaller the diameter of the tube, the harder it was to get a reading \u2013 and sometimes I could get no reading at all.\u00a0 In the table, there is a column labelled &#8220;As-built (mm) Wall&#8221;. \u00a0This is the data reported by the ultrasound device, often rounded for convenience. \u00a0If I measured the same tube in different places or on different\u00a0bikes of the same model, I would get a range of readings. \u00a0So please take the data I have measured as &#8216;indicative results&#8217; and not &#8216;absolute results&#8217; that can only be obtained\u00a0by destructive methods (like drilling or cutting tubes and taking physical measurements).<\/p>\n<p>There is an Ebay seller of Aermacchi parts called Wilto54 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.com\/usr\/wilto54\">http:\/\/www.ebay.com\/usr\/wilto54<\/a>) that I have purchased from in the past.\u00a0 I sent him a message to ask if he had any scrap frames that he could saw through the backbone, so I could get a definitive measurement of wall thickness.\u00a0 He agreed and a few days later he said a 1972 350cc had a backbone wall thickness of 0.18inch (4.572 mm).\u00a0 That is off the scale!\u00a0 The thickest wall I measured with the ultrasound was 4mm (0.157 inch), and I thought that was excessively thick.\u00a0 Many custom builders today use DOM 0.120 inch (3.0mm).<\/p>\n<p>We have one CRS that had the seat rails cut off it, so we could measure the tube thickness with a gauge.\u00a0 It turns out to be quite thick, at 3mm.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2704\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2704\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2704\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globaldimension.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/66CRS-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Aermacchi CRS 1966 with cut set frame tubes.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.globaldimension.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/66CRS.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.globaldimension.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/66CRS-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.globaldimension.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/66CRS-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.globaldimension.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/66CRS-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2704\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aermacchi CRS 1966 with cut set frame tubes.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the table, there is a note regarding the 350cc swingarm.\u00a0 In that model, they put one tube inside another tube, and then pressed it into the final shape.\u00a0 We will show more details on this feature in a future article.
