Innovative hinge for scooter seat design

Streamline Seats UG  (www.streamlineseats.de) manufactures custom-designed seats for small motorcycles and scooters.  They desired to make a custom seat product for a Royal scooter.  They came to Global Dimension to help with the mechanical aspects of the seat design. We used our 3D-scanning technology from Creaform Metra and C-Track, along with our design tools from 3D Systems DesignX.

The design challenge:

Streamline Seats makes many seats for many scooters, and they had an existing design that would look great on this Royal scooter.  The problem we needed to solve was to modify this existing design in two major areas:

  1. The edge of the seat needs to match the body curvature of the Royal scooter.  There needs to be a consistent gap between the seat and the bodywork.
  2. The existing hinge makes the new seat design hit the bodywork when the seat is opened.  We needed to design a hinge that would not only allow a seat to be opened, but it also needed to simultaneously shift the seat forward, to avoid interference with the scooter’s body.  A four-bar linkage hinge was the solution.

We will let the pictures (below), tell the story.

We have an idea….

We used a four-bar linkage system – simple and strong.
